The study of singing at the Fundación Cristina Heeren has a two-fold objective: to define the distinctive characteristics that make up the identity of Flamenco music in general and flamenco song in particular, and to encourage the students to respect these traditional forms. Students are exposed to the earliest recordings as well as the most representative versions of the various styles of songs. At the same time, students are urged to develop their own personalities as artists within the framework of tradition. Our singing teachers are Julián Estrada, Lidia Montero and Rosa Navarro “La Divi”, amongst other artists such as Jeromo Segura, Virginia Gámez, Rocio Márquez and Gema Jiménez, all of them ex-students of our school.

The academic programme consists of three levels – Basic, Intermediate and Advanced, and each academic year has a different level and a different target. Each year students receive a diploma or a certificate that prove his/her qualifications, number of hours and level.

These are our levels in the singing course:

BASIC COURSE

The aim of the Basic Singing Course is to teach students vocal technique and to familiarise them with metric patterns through the study of simple styles such as Fandangos, Sevillanas, Verdiales and Abandolaos, and through more rhythmic styles such as Tangos, Cantiñas and Soleares.

The academic programme includes theoretical and practical subjects, spread over four 90 minutes sessions!

Students of the Basic Singing level are those who are beginners and those who are not able to accompany the rhythmic styles with palmas.

The schedule (mornings and afternoons) will depend on the availability of the teachers and classrooms.

INTERMEDIATE COURSE

The aim of the Intermediate Singing Course is to enrich the students’ repertoire by teaching them a wide variety of song styles, including those which are devoid of rhythm. Also, students acquire the basic knowledge of how to sing for dance accompaniment through the styles of the Caña, Alegrías and Taranto.

The academic programme includes theoretical and practical subjects, spread over four 90 minutes sessions!

Students of the Intermediate Singing Course are those who have passed the Basic Course at our school, and those who already possess a minimum repertoire: a serious song style, a festive one, a popular one and one devoid of rhythm.

ADVANCED COURSE

The Advanced Singing Course is designed to complete the professional training of the students as singers. In this course the Academic Programme includes the most difficult versions of each style, as all the different existing variants. In the accompaniment to dancing, the students will study Solea, Seguiriya and Bulerias as performed at the closing of a show.

The academic program includes theoretical and practical subjects, spread over four 90 minutes sessions!

Students of the Advanced Singing Course are those who have passed the Intermediate Singing Level at our school, and those who know the Cantes de Levante, the repertoire of the Cantiñas, all the different styles of the group of Soleares and those who master the structure and the fundamentals of Dance accompaniment of the Caña, Alegrias and Taranto.

The schedule (mornings and afternoons) will depend on the availability of the teachers and classrooms.
