The studies of the singing specialty in the Cristina Heeren Foundation’s School of Flamenco Art have a double objective: to learn the classical forms of flamenco songs and to train singers respectful of this tradition.

In order to fulfil the first objective, students study the first recording of each flamenco style, as well as the versions most representative of each style. In addition to that, the teachers help the students to find their own singing personality without betraying the model and taking into account the contemporary fashions. The pedagogy of our method includes recitation, breathing, vocalisation, study of the melodies and flamenco songs, analysis of the rhythm and mastering the techniques and codes of accompaniment. The graduates of the singing specialty will also be prepared to accompany dance.

Our singing teachers are José el de la Tomasa, Juan José Amador, María José Pérez, Manuel Lombo, Manuel Romero, Rosi Navarro “La Divi” and Lidia Montero, amongst other artists.

The Study Program consists of three courses – 1st (Basic), 2nd (Intermediate) and 3rd (Advanced) – and their levels and aims might vary from year to year. As students pass every course, they will receive a diploma or certificate confirming their grades, contact hours, and level of artistic interpretation.

The academic plan will incorporate, from 2018, new subjects for students of more advanced level: improvisation sessions, choreographic workshops, stage practice, musical production and the subject “Emotional intelligence in the artist”, taught by José Antonio Galiani.

These are our singing levels:

1st ANNUAL FLAMENCO SINGING COURSE (Basic Level)

The aim of Level 1 Flamenco Singing is to introduce the student to the knowledge of the melody and of the "compás" (Flamenco rhythm), as well as Flamenco vocal techniques. This is achieved through a study that begins with the flamenco songs closest to Andalusian folklore (fandangos from Huelva and abandolaos) and ends with some of the fundamental rhythmic styles of flamenco (tangos, cantiñas and soleares). Another objective of Level 1 Flamenco Singing is to introduce the students to the secrets of the "cante atrás" (dance accompaniment singing) as it applies to the dance of "alegrías".

The academic program includes eight subjects (Theory and Practice), delivered in FOUR/FIVE DAILY BLOCKS. There are four Core subjects in Level 1 Flamenco Singing (shared by all specialisations) one of which is an Elective.

Teachers:

Throughout the annual course, students in the Level 1 Flamenco Singing will take classes with María José Pérez, Manuel Lombo, Manuel Romero, Lidia Montero, Patricia Lozano and Pepa Sánchez. Additionally, the course includes contact with the wisdom of José el de la Tomasa in classes of applied vocal technique.

The teaching staff of the Cristina Heeren Foundation of Flamenco Art’s school is subject to changes and updates, as required by professional commitments and academic needs.

Level 1 Flamenco Singing:

Students in Level 1 Flamenco Singing will be beginners and those not able to accompany the rhythmic songs in time with hand clapping.

During the 2nd course, students begin to work on singing variations for dance accompaniment with the typical traditional techniques of this speciality.

The academic program includes eight subjects (Theory and Practice), delivered in FOUR/FIVE DAILY BLOCKS. There are four Core subjects in Level 2 Flamenco Singing (shared by all specialisations) one of which is an Elective.
