DANCE DEPARTMENT
MILAGROS MENJÍBAR (Triana, 1952).
First prize winner at the National Contest in Cordoba in 1974,
Milagros is considered one of the most prestigious dancers
in the country. She has performed at the most important Flamenco
Festivals in the whole continent, and has recently been awarded
the Critic's Prize. She is sought after as a teacher, having
taught dance in Japan for a year, and having succesfully prepared
several students for the National Contest. Milagros prominent
position in the world of flamenco dance is due to her exceptionally
graceful and feminine style as well as her talent for expression.
Milagros directs the Dance Department at the Flamenco Art
School of the Cristina Heeren Foudation.
RAFAEL
CAMPALLO (Sevilla, 1974).
His first teachers were José Galván and Manolo Marín.
He has worked in the sevillian tablaos of "Los Gallos" and
"El Arenal" and in the companies of Manolo Marín, María Pagés,
Manuela Carrasco, Manolo Soler, Vicente Amigo and the Compañía
Andaluza de Danza, under the direction of Mario Maya. He won
the prize "El Desplante" of the National Contest of Singing
of Las Minas de La Unión (1999). Rafael Campallo has performed
in stages all around the world and his dancing style is manly,
classic, respectful of the flamenco canon and specifically
spectacular for the farruca, seguiriya, tarantos, bulerías
and soleá por bulerías.
CARMEN LEDESMA (Macarena, 1956).
Carmen has danced in the Companies of Mario Maya, Farruco,
Curro Velez and with Antonio Gades in the National Ballet.
In 1983 she won the first prize in the National Contest of
Cordoba, and since then she has been invited as a star of
flamenco dancing in various theatres, dictating classes and
masterly lectures in various parts of the world.
She has danced in the companies of Mario Maya, Farruco, Curro
Vélez and with Antonio Gades in the National Ballet. In 1983
she won the First Prize "Juana la Macarrona" in the National
Contest of Cordoba, and since then she has been invited as
a flamenco dance figure to different stages in the world,
giving courses and masterly lessons in different countries.
Her kind of dance is racial and of a great character: the
happiest when one must be happy, and the most solemn when
seriousness is imperative.
YOLANDA LORENZO (Amsterdam, 1967).
Yolanda graduated in Classical Spanish dance in the Conservatoire
of Sevilla and Cordoba. She has been a flamenco teacher in
the school of Matilde Coral (1981-1987) and dancer of the
company "La Cuadra" of Salvador Távora (1987-1992). She teaches
dancing and accompaniment in the Cristina Heeren Foundation.
ASUNCION
PEREZ, «LA CHONI» (Sevilla, 1974)
Asunción Pérez
was born in Seville and started studying dance at a very early
age. She graduated from the Music Conservatory and continued
to study Flamenco dance with such prestigious teachers as
José Granero, Manolete, Eva la Yerbabuena, Milagros
Menjíbar, Antonio Canales, Javier Barón, Javier
Latorre, Israel Galván, and José Antonio. She
was assigned a part in Carlos Saura´s film Sevillanas
as well as in the presentation film of the World Fair of Seville,
Expo 92.
«Choni» was a member of Mario Maya´s company
when, in the Bienal de Flamenco of Seville, in 1998, he presented
his show De Cádiz a Cuba, and in the same festival
she also performed in José Joaquín´s show
Sansueña. In the Bienal of Seville of the year 2000
she performed and also acted as assistant director in the
show Colores, with Rafael de Carmen.
Choni is one of the most important young dancers and she has
performed in the festival Les Voix du Chant Flamenco in Grenoble,
the Royal Poinciana Playhouse in Palm Beach, the Spanish Cultural
Centre of Miami, the Danny Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College
(New York), and the Metroplitan Museum of New York.
An expert in the bata de cola, Choni teaches Flamenco Dance
Technique at the Cristina Heeren Flamenco Foundation.
