CALIXTO SÁNCHEZ (Mairena del Alcor, 1947).
Prized by Andrés Segovia in the Festival de Granada (1972)
and winner of the prize Antonio Chacón of the National Contest
of Cordoba (1974) and of the "Giraldillo del Cante" in Seville
(1980), Calixto Sánchez is one of the most charismatic and
exceptional cantaores in Spain. His repertoire is varied,
his voice wide and sonorous, his technique accomplished and
his style simple and polished. He is the author of six discographical
works, among which we can highlight Castillo de Luna (1990),
De los Alcores a Granada (1994), De la lírica al cante (1996)
y Antonio Machado: Retrato Flamenco (2001). He directs the
Singing Department of the Escuela de Arte Flamenco of the
Fundación Cristina Heeren.
JOSÉ DE LA TOMASA (Sevilla, 1951).
José is an outstanding singer who combines family tradition
with a very personal power of expression. In 1977 he was the
winner of the "Manuel Torre" prize of the National Contest
of Cordoba. His performances at home and abroad have always
been very succesfull thanks to his strong personality and
to his spontaneous creativity. The brilliant timbre of his
voice enables him to express himself through a wide range
of emotion, as listeners can appreciate in his six recordings,
particulary in the CD Al compás del Sueño.
ESPERANZA FERNÁNDEZ (Triana, 1966)
Esperanza was born in Triana in
1966 and she received her Flamenco legacy in a family of important
cantaores, guitarists and dancers from Utrera, Lebrija and Triana.
She represents the avangard of Flamenco Singing, because Esperanza
not only has a large and ortodox Flamenco repertory, but she
also has an extraordinary versatility towards other artistic
genres like jazz, lyrical singing and Andalusí music.
She has worked with the best Flamenco artists like Paco de Lucía,
Camarón de la Isla, Enrique Morente, Gerardo Núñez
and Rafael Riqueni, among others. «Esperanza Fernández»
(2001) is her first CD as a soloist.
PACO TARANTO (Triana, 1940)
SingerPaco was born in Triana in 1940 in the Zurraque neighborhood,
when he met an old Flamenco singers like Oliver, El Arenero,
Abadía, El Teta, El Sordillo, Tragapanes and Ballesteros.
With sixteenth years old won the prize of Radio Sevilla and
formed «Los Tarantos» with Salvador Távora.
He has worked in the golden age of the Flamenco tablaos and
has seven discs like Por los mares de los sueños, Cantándole
a ella, Suspiros al mar, Sueños de niño and Cuánto
te quise, among others. Paco Taranto has flavor, freshness and
singer wisdom.
ANTONIO SAAVEDRA (Triana,
1944).
Antonio began in the most important tablaos of "Los Gallos"
and "La Cochera", where he has accompanied the most important
figures of dancing. Winner of the prize El Rincón del Cante
of Cordoba (1986), and official singer of the National Contest
of Cordoba from 1994, now he is Assistant Professor of the
Flamenco Art School, accompaning the classes of dancing and
guitar.
